The current Saturn Vue was new two years ago, and last year the Vue Hybrid finally made its debut to meet consumer demands for a fuel-efficient crossover. When is a Saab not a Saab? Certainly, the 9-7X, the company’s first SUV, had Saab’s signature grille, requisite badging and floor-mounted ignition. But underneath the Swedish veneer was General Motors’ midsize, truck-based SUV platform, which means that the 9-7X shared its core mechanicals with the departed Chevy Trailblazer family (including models from Buick, GMC, Isuzu and Oldsmobile).
The Saab 9-7X thus felt like a trucky GM SUV that was taken to Sweden to get a mild infusion of Saab character, which — no surprise — is exactly what it is. It’s like putting Uncle Sam in a Viking helmet, or Bruce Springsteen in an ABBA jumpsuit. In spite of Saab’s best efforts at altering the interior and exterior styling and revising the vehicle’s suspension tuning, it could never hide the fact that the Ohio-built 9-7X was limited by its heritage. If it’s an engine with more than four cylinders, Volvo doesn’t want it in its lineup. Within the next 10 years, the Swedish automaker plans to eliminate any engine options greater than four cylinders in an effort to reduce fuel consumption and C02 emissions. No more five- and six-cylinder mills. In their place, Volvo will employ three- and four-cylinder units in both gasoline and diesel form.
The new engine family is called Volvo Environmental Architecture (VEA), and the automaker says the new powertrains will be nearly 200 pounds lighter than its current engines. In addition, the new mills will improve fuel economy by 35 percent. That will be an impressive boost, and Volvo believes it can accomplish this feat without a reduction in performance.
The 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines will start to make their way into production models by 2013. By 2020, the entire lineup will be filled with them.

BMW confirms M-tuned 5 Series diesel. As part of the buildup to this weekend’s Pebble Beach Concours weekend, Autoblog senior editor Damon Lavrinc is in Monterey with BMW, where he has been able to confirm that the 5 Series will receive a diesel model tuned by the automaker’s M performance division.
Interestingly, the much-rumored high-performance model will probably not be badged as an M5 variant. Instead, it will likely adopt a nomenclature similar to that of the 1 Series M Coupe. Further, because of the diesel’s expected high torque output, the M-tuned diesel 5 Series is likely to be offered exclusively with all-wheel drive. Following traditional BMW naming guidelines, that means the vehicle is likely to get an ungainly moniker like BMW 550d xDrive M or something similar (TheDetroitBureau.com suggests 550dM or 550dXM as other possibilities).
The 3.0-liter tri-turbo’s torque output is likely to be prodigious – perhaps in the neighborhood of 650 pound-feet (the conventional gas M5 makes 500 lb-ft), a figure more commonly associated with heavy duty pickups. Even if you’ve managed to wrap your gray matter around that torque surplus, you’re probably still pondering the idea of a triple-turbo engine. According to TheDetroitBureau.com, the new powerplant will be based on the current 3.0-liter diesel we’ve come to know and love, albeit significantly modified, including a unique cylinder head. The engine will make use of a single, small turbo to help avoid lag at launch, coupled with a pair of larger twin-scroll units to augment power at speed. We hear that peak ponies will be down from the M5′s 560-horsepower output, though it is still likely to stay about 500.
Predictably, the new engine is also expected to find its way into high-performance versions of BMW’s X5 and X6 crossovers, both of which already offer physics-defying M models of their own.

2011 Mitsubishi Outlander GT.

ASSOCIATE EDITOR JONATHAN WONG: The GT trim level was new last year to the Mitsubishi Outlander lineup and returns for the 2011 model year carrying all the same equipment, such as the all-wheel-drive system from the Lancer Evolution, a potent V6 engine and tight handling dynamics. However, there is a nice pricing surprise for crossover shoppers: Mitsubishi lowered the base price of the Outlander GT by almost $1,700 from the previous year. That surely will upset some owners of the 2010 model but provides a pretty good value argument to those currently in the market.
Other than the price, the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander GT is unchanged, and that’s OK. From a drive standpoint, the suspension is well-sorted, and the steering is tuned nicely for good response, feedback and weight. The Outlander stays nicely planted around turns, yet the suspension still offers adequate absorption abilities for the rough road conditions so very common around Detroit after a long winter.
Power from the 3.0-liter V6 is strong, with 230 hp on tap, and a slick six-speed automatic gearbox. Magnesium paddle shifters to select gears manually are also here. Surprisingly, manual shift response isn’t half-bad for a torque-converter transmission.
There is a noticeable attempt by Mitsubishi to spruce up things some in the cabin. Instead of the acres of hard-plastic surfaces throughout the interior, there are some panels that have been covered in padded vinyl with white accent stitching. The Rockford Fosgate sound system, which is part of the optional Touring package installed on our tester, sounds great, too. However, a little more sound insulation would be appreciated. When you get on the throttle, the V6′s raspy engine note seeps into the cabin, and a fair amount of road and wind noise does as well.
And as I said in my notes last year after the first time I sampled this Outlander GT, don’t count on the third row of seats unless it’s for very small children. It’s extremely tight back there. On the other hand, if the kids are being bad, stuffing them in the third row could serve as a form of punishment.

Having spent the weekend with the Outlander, I come back without much excitement. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a decent SUV but one that maintains middle-of-the-road ratings across the board.
The Outlander handled fairly well; the dirt roads did irritate the ride a bit, but no more than most SUVs. Expressway passing wasn’t a problem, and it seemed pretty stable taking turns and going through occasional slush.
The interior, while having luxuries like heated leather seats and a nav system, left something to be desired as far as design and quality. The controls felt and looked cheap, and the touch-screen display was screaming for a redesign. And all you ladies out there sporting long nails (or guys who may procrastinate on clipping), this touch screen is not for you. The buttons are long and skinny, making it hard to accurately make a selection while also keeping the main focus on the road.
I’m not quite sure if I like the billet grille; I keep going back and forth, but the killer for me is that I always think of a koala bear’s massive black nose whenever I see it. The LED taillights get a thumbs-up from me; they give that angle just enough flavor and distinction to set it apart from the pack on the road.
